The owners of this new construction addition project wanted to invest in the best insulation possible. They had compared the costs of spray foam and tradition insulations, and although the cost of spray foam was more, they knew it would pay off in the end, because they would see greater energy savings and their home would ultimately be healthier and more comfortable.
The roof deck was insulated with 6 nominal inches of open cell foam insulation. This sealed off all ridge vents, gable vents, and soffit vents, creating an air- tight 94% efficient thermal cap on the home. All exterior walls on both levels of the home were insulated with 4 nominal inches of open cell foam insulation. The earth of the crawlspace was sealed with a thick, heavy-duty liner. The rim joist area was also insulated, and the exterior of the home had flex drain installed with a trench dug from the corner of the home to the edge of the bank to route unwanted water.
