This homeowner in Allen Junction, WV reached out to Reed's Sprayfoam Insulation after having a local television company install lines. The technician noted that there was no plastic over the bare earth (and mud) in the crawlspace. Two days prior, they had an all-day rain. The next day, the homeowner was going into the crawlspace to spread plastic that they had purchased for the purpose. They sat down in two inches of water. The entire visible portion of the crawlspace had standing water 1-3 inches deep. By the next day, it had drained away but had the issue of it staying damp all the time. This moisture issue can lead to mold growth and wood rot if not remediated.

Solutions provided:

The solution to this problem was a crawlspace encapsulation system. Our crew sealed the saturated earth with a liner made of a 16 mil high and low-density polyethylene with polyester-cord reinforcement. The liner is treated with an antimicrobial finish that protects against mold and mildew growth on or under the liner. The foundation walls were insulated with 2 nominal inches of closed cell foam insulation. This creates a continuous seal on the liner. All foundation and crawl space vents were sealed. The rim joist area was insulated with 4 nominal inches of open cell foam insulation, which sealed all air leaks. The crawlspace is now within the thermal envelope of the home, not to mention a clean, dry, healthier space. This will lower energy costs for the homeowner, make the living space above more comfortable, and improve the quality of the air the homeowners are breathing daily.
